This ability is due to the presence of a substance called “fluorescent pigment” in their exoskeleton. When exposed to ultraviolet light, the pigment absorbs the energy and re-emits it as visible light, causing the scorpion to glow and also help them to detect prey and avoid predators in their nocturnal habitat.
