Insects are primarily attracted to artificial lights because the lights mimic the moon i.e they mistake the lights for the moon which many insects use to navigate.

📍Insects use the moon as a navigational tool to help them fly in a straight line. But when they see artificial lights, they become confused and disoriented, and end up flying around in circles.
